What You Can Do With A Masters In Healthcare

Posted on: 10 May 2017

If you already work in healthcare, you may be wondering how a master's degree could make a difference in your career. It depends on the type of degree you are pursuing. However, because it is a master's in healthcare, it can only mean an upward movement in your field. Here are just a few master's healthcare programs that you can get and what you can do with these degrees.

Master's in Nursing

With a master's in nursing you can become the head nurse on any floor of a hospital. You can also become the director of nursing and put your hands-on nursing days behind you. A master's in nursing is also the stepping stone needed to a doctorate in nursing and/or a license as a nurse practitioner.

Master's in Healthcare Business

A master's in healthcare with an emphasis on business allows you to become the head of operations in a clinic or hospital. You are the prime person responsible for purchasing supplies, machines, equipment and tracking inventory, expenses, and billing. You may also be given the chance to work in a supervisory role or position of authority, such as a hospital board member.

Master's in Healthcare Operations

A master's in healthcare operations means that you spend most of your days monitoring daily operations of utilities, moving departments and equipment around, making sure custodial staff are finishing their daily workloads, and checking with the kitchen and laundry staff to make sure they are on task. It is definitely a supervisory role for which there is no equal. If you like being in charge and love keeping up with a hectic pace of everything going on around you in the hospital, then this might be an MBA program for you.

If you have made your choice and you are certain that you want to pursue a healthcare MBA, you do have the option to pursue it on your own time. There are many continuing education programs for adults that allow you to complete your courses online or at night, if you work during the day. It may take you longer to complete your degree if you are working full-time, but you know that you can still reach your goals. If you are in a hurry to complete your degree, there are ways around your job or ways to complete the courses on an accelerated schedule. Talk to a college advisor to see what may work for you.
